11 Frugal Tips to save you big bucks!

11 Frugal Living Tips That Can Save You LOT$ !

Did you know…?

1. Rotisserie Chickens at the grocery store are half price after 7:30, so it’s the perfect time to stock-up, chop-up & freeze! (Reidsville folks, just leave me some please!)

2. Mix your mouthwash with peroxide (50/50) for an inexpensive teeth whitening rinse!

4. Add 1 cup of white vinegar to your load of laundry along with your regular detergent to brighten colors & whiten whites without bleach (ie. Disgusting chemicals!). I promise, they won’t smell like vinegar…they’ll smell fresh and clean!

5. Add ½ cup of white vinegar during the rinse cycle for reducing static cling and softening without making your towels less absorbent (which happens with regular fabric softeners) Can you tell I’m all about the white vinegar & cleaning? :)

6. E-bates - This is likely the easiest way to save money! Whenever you’re shopping on line, search for your store through the E-bates site, make your purchase and earn cash back!

Last week I got over 50% back (over $23!) on an already discounted magazine subscription for my husband for Father’s Day! Ebates really does seem to good to be true, but they are simply sharing a portion of the commission they receive from the retailers for sending them customers. Click here to sign up.

7. Slow Down, Save Gas – Driving 65 m.p.h. uses 15% more gas than driving 55 m.p.h…that’s like paying 40¢ more per gallon! Not to mention saving on speeding ticket charges and increases in insurance when you get one. (which I will admit I – I got one last year – ouch) :(

8. Save on Prescriptions Avoid medications known as “Combo Pills.” These medications combine more than one medication into a single pill. For example, Lotrel is a blood pressure combo pill that costs $70 a month (generic). However, if you get a prescription for each component, you’ll save a huge amount of money. The 30-day prescriptions of the two elements that make up Lotreal – Amlodipine and Benazepril – are only $6 each – saving $64 a month!

Ask your doctor if your prescriptions are for these “combo pills”, and if so ask him/her to write a script for the components instead. Then ask your pharmacy if any of your prescriptions are on their Discounted Generics List – which costs only $4.00 at most stores!

9. Affordable Travel – Have a friend that lives out of town/state? Say, at the beach or in the mountains? Organize a house-swap instead of paying for a hotel or cabin when you go on vacation! Coordinate your vacation schedules and let them use your place, and you use theirs. Even if neither of you live in a touristy area, a getaway from the everyday is always nice now & then.

10. Fix it yourself before calling the pros! The internet is an amazing resource, and there’s a video tutorial out there that will teach you just about anything! Want to save money by fixing your own toilet…want to recover an old chair instead of putting it on the curb? There’s a You Tube video for that and just about anything else you can think of learning!

11. Repurpose finding a new use for something old! Have an old frame? Spray paint it in your color of choice, Get a cheap piece of corkboard or whiteboard (which you may already have at home, as well and if not you can get at Dollar Tree for a buck), cut it to fit. You just saved $10 or more at a store by making your own, personalize corkboard with style! Use leftover buttons or scraps of ribbon/fabric to add even more pizzazz! Last year, I repurposed a coffee canister into a cute clothes pin holder that hangs on my clothesline – you can see how I did it here.

Norwex - why didn't I think of this??

I was reading some of my many favorite cleaning/organizing/decluttering blogs a few weeks ago, looking for some recipes for homemade glass cleaner that wouldn't leave streaks of yellow (pollen) all over my windows. One of the bloggers mentioned mentioned how much she "loves Norwex window cloths". Off I went in search of them...

I first found them for sale on some big-name shopping sites (one of which starts with an "A" and ends with a "mazon"). This shop wanted as much for shipping as the items themselves - that's never made sense to me.

The more I looked, the more I read and learned and finally I landed on a site where I could sign up to sell these products and by that time, I was hooked. Or at least, I thought I'd get a bunch of really cool new cleaning supplies to play with...and I LOVE cleaning supplies ...just take a peek in my hall closet if you don't believe me.

Fast-forward about a week: I got my starter kit in the mail and started using the products. I have to admit, I was skeptical. I've bought microfiber cloths in the past and frankly, I thought they didn't do a bit of good. I've been more of a plain ol' dish-towel girl, using old ones to wipe up messy spills and clean doggie-water-bowl-dribbles off the floor.

Friday night (yes, I'm a wild woman): I started trying out the supposedly "amazing" microfiber cloths. And if the fact that I was still scrubbing anything I could get my hands on at midnight tells you anything - YES, they are AMAZING! My daughter was laughing at me, because I was literally wiping down everything in the house with these cloths dampened with tap water.

Here are a few things I have cleaned, so far, with the Norwex Antibacterial Microfiber Cloth:

All of the kitchen counters
Stove (top to bottom)
Fridge doors/handles
Sharpie off the bathroom tile (don't ask)
Walls behind trashcan (yuck, they get gunky!)
Door frames and window sills
My future son-in-law's Playstation 3 (hey, they get dusty and have lots of fingerprints!)

If you have cheap flat white paint on your walls, you feel my pain at trying to keep them clean...I wiped down a few walls of my own - painted with cheap flat white paint - that didn't get damaged one bit from the cloth and looked like new after.

I tried the dry mop over the weekend. Frankly, I wasn't very impressed. But maybe I'm not using it right or something, because everyone else raves about how great it is. I should read the instructions or something...will report back on this when I use it again.

The window cloth that I'd originally been searching for is... for lack of a better phrase... the best thing since sweet tea, Cheerwine, and Sun Drop! And if you're a fellow Southerner, you KNOW how great sweet tea, Cheerwine, and Sundrop are! For my yankee friends - it's the best thing since a grilled brat or Euchre. (How's that?) No streaks whatsoever, works dry or dampened with a little water... I'm gonna have birds flying into my windows like on that commercial (but without the stinky smell of that product)

Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience, and if you're at all interested in learning more or getting some Norwex stuff for yourself (either as a hostess - online, in-person, or business orders) just give me a shout via email or my Facebook page!

Tasty Tuesday - Baked Spaghetti to die for!

I originally found this recipe at Once a Month Mom and thought "Hmm, french fried onions on spaghetti??" but since well, who doesn't love french fried onions?? I decided to try it. My family absolutely LOVED it! I made up several batches to freeze, along with some other great recipes from OAMM, but this one got gone QUICK. I mean, we ate like 3 pans of it in 2 weeks! My hips can attest to this fact...

I made it again last night (the OAMC session was a few months ago, just to clarify LOL) and didn't have everything the original recipe called for, so I tweaked it a bit. Here's my version:

Ingredients:
  • 1 bag frozen pepper mix (green, red, yellow pepper strips)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 16oz (2 blocks) cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup or so milk (eyeball it as you're melting the cream cheese)
  • 16 pasta (any kind, I used for one pan, rotini for another)
  • 2 jars spaghetti sauce (any brand/flavor you like)
  • Shredded mozzerella cheese or Italian Blend
  • 1 large container of French Fried Onions

Directions:

  • Prepare pasta as directed on package.
  • Saute vegetables in margarine.
  • Add cream cheese and milk until well blended.
  • Add spaghetti sauce to this and mix well.
  • Combine half of spaghetti sauce and cream cheese mixture with cooked pasta.
  • Divide evenly in baking dishes to suit your family size. Top with the rest of the sauce mixture, sprinkle with shredded cheese and crushed french-fried onions.
Freeze at this point if you don't want to cook it all now (it makes A LOT) or...
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

BTW, I use mostly store brand stuff for this recipe: frozen peppers, spaghetti sauce, cream cheese, french fried onions...makes it a really frugal meal!

I also use whole wheat pasta & organic skim milk to make it just a *little* healthy. ;)

Great new-to-me Christan online vendor - organic products!

I like finding a good deal.  I LOVE finding a good deal on organic products!  As we all know, going green can be expensive.  I was so happy to find Tropical Traditions online.  They have the most fabulous organic products, and the best sales EVER!!  Right now, you can enter a giveaway for a FREE quart of organic coconut oil.  And today only (1/16/10) you can get a FREE 16oz bottle of Organic Maple Syrup!  The last time I bought real maple syrup at my local healthy chain-grocer,  it was VERY expensive - and not even organic!

Another thing I love is supporting fellow Christians in their lives - and Tropical Traditions is a Christian owned & operated organization.  You can read the owner's story here: Peace with God.

If you happen to place an order, please consider putting me as your sponsor so I can get coupons toward my own future orders. If you don't, no problem either - just wanting to share where my income is now going...ummm...I mean how I found healthier alternatives in the kitchen! ;)  I'd really, really appreciate it!!  Here's the 411:

Healthy Peanut Butter Cups!

Reece's Peanut Butter cups are my son's favorite candy of all time, but I really hate buying them and having him eat all the junk they use in commercial candies.  (Yes, he's 18, but still my baby boy!)

A friend sent me this wonderful, simple recipe this morning for homemade peanut butter squares.  I tweaked the instructions a bit for cups and will use organic sugar, peanut butter, real butter and dark chocolate chips (gotta have those antioxidants!):

1 box confectioner's sugar
1 softened stick of butter
1 12 oz. jar of peanut butter (creamy or crunchy)

1 bag semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • Knead confectioner's sugar, peanut butter, and butter together.
  • Put liners in mini-muffin cups.
  • Fill mini-muffin cups 1/2 full with peanut butter mixture. Press until firmly in bottom of each cup.
  • Melt bag of chocolate chips in microwave.  Spoon chocolate over peanut butter mixture until just covered - or thicker for us chocoholics  ;)
  • Refrigerate cups until set well, then invert pan to remove.
  • Set upright on a platter for serving, or arrange in a tin with wax paper between layer for gift-giving.
Be sure to keep cool to prevent melting in containers.

Yummy & a little more healthy than store-bought!  :)

Frugal Friday

Well, this is really a Trash-to-Treasure post, but I did save $$ by doing this myself instead of buying new so... I had been wanting a bread box for the longest time, and had been looking at stores for them. Of course being the tightwad that I am, I hadn't bought one. Lucky for me that I happened upon one at the thrift store for $6.00!

Here are the before & afters... I'm pretty proud of myself, and this looks great in my kitchen! I might do the trim in a different color at some point, but right now I don't trust my painting abilities not to mess it up.

I'm pretty sure I owned this exact style in the late 80's...
maybe mine had geese on it, though.
(Admit it, you were into the geese too!)

And after a $1.12 can of spray paint:
